(Longmont, CO) March 2024 – Longmont pet owners are encouraged to register their pets using the city’s new program, DocuPet. The registration program opened up to Longmont residents earlier this year and allows the city of Longmont a better way of reuniting pets with their owners.
In December, the Longmont City Council approved a switch in pet registration. In the past, pet licenses — required annually by the city — were obtained through the Longmont Humane Society.
The new system allows for online registration. Owners can modify pet profiles to include pet photos and chip information. Longmont Animal Control can access these files when they find a lost pet and return the pet to its owner, instead of dropping it off at the Longmont Humane Society, Jeff Satur, Longmont police chief told the Longmont Leader in December.
The new service will also direct fees for pet licenses to the Longmont Police Department instead of the Longmont Humane Society, Satur said.
The program also allows pet owners the ability to create their own pet tags. The tags include a unique code on the back that links to the pet’s online profile. When a pet is found, a member of the community can create a “Found Pet” report online, which are searchable by pet owners.
“We are excited about our partnership with DocuPet as their online licensing solution will be extremely valuable to pet owners and necessary for animal safety within the community,” Satur said. “This pet licensing partnership will help to increase the number of animals returned to their owners, reduce the number of animals who end up in shelters and then allow shelters to focus on pets that truly need care.”
